Biography

Dr. Shifalika Goenka is a specialist in the area of health promotion, behavior modification, primary health care delivery, qualitative research methods, and chronic disease epidemiology. Dr Goenka received her MBBS from Topiwala National Medical College, undertook fellowships at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and completed her doctoral work at AIIMS conducting an in-depth, ethnographic fieldwork study to understand the micro-dynamics of health-care-delivery at the level of the private general practitioners in relation to diabetes. She has 18 years’ experience interacting with a wide range of groups, from healthcare providers to marginalized populations, from community members, children and school groups to policy makers, and has made significant contributions through research, design, planning, training, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of many national and international projects in India.

Dr. Goenka developed a culture-specific diabetes curriculum for diabetes nurse educators, private general practitioners and patients, conceptualized, designed and developed the health promotion component of one of the largest worksite primary prevention intervention studies for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in India. Dr. Goenka has worked intensively in school based projects, working towards student behavior modification to encourage a healthy diet, physical activity and prevention of tobacco use.

She has published widely, and has authored an advocacy book targeting policy makers addressing urban design, the support of agriculture and healthy foods, fair food labeling and protecting children and marginalized populations from unfair advertising practices. Dr. Goenka conceived the Indian Food Pyramid, is a member of the editorial board of the “Journal of Physical Activity and Health (JPAH), member of the “International Society of Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH)” and invited member of its education committee. She teaches post graduate courses in healthcare economics, financing and policy, non-communicable disease and public health, research methodology, ethical issues in research, and qualitative research to public health and healthcare professionals at the Public Health Foundation of India and the Indian Institute of Public Health – New Delhi.
