Biography

K.S. Reddy, MD, DM, MSc is President of the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), and former head of the Department of Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Appointed to establish and head PHFI in 2006, Dr. Reddy is responsible for leading the institute in its mission to build Public Health capacity in India through education, training, research, policy development, health communication and advocacy.

A trained cardiologist and epidemiologist, Dr. Reddy has been involved in several major international and national research studies including the INTERSALT global study of blood pressure and electrolytes, INTERHEART global study on risk factors of myocardial infarction, national collaborative studies on epidemiology of coronary heart disease and community control of rheumatic heart disease. Widely regarded as a leader of preventive cardiology at both the national and international levels, Dr. Reddy has been a researcher, teacher, policy enabler, advocate and activist who has worked tirelessly to promote cardiovascular health, tobacco control, chronic disease prevention and healthy living across the lifespan.

Dr. Reddy has served on expert panels, steering committees and the boards of many national and international health organizations, including the WHO and the United Nations. He is the current President of the World Heart Federation (2013-14), chairs the Thematic Group on Health of the United Nations Leadership Council of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (ww.unsdsn.org). In India, Dr. Reddy is President of the National Board of Examinations which oversees Indian post-graduate medical education; chairs the Core Advisory Group on Health and Human Rights for the National Human Rights Commission of India; and is member of the National Science and Engineering Research Board of the Government of India. He recently chaired the High Level Expert Group on Universal Health Coverage, created by the Planning Commission of India.

Dr. Reddy has received global recognition for his work in cardiology, including appointment as the first Bernard Lown Visiting Professor of Cardiovascular Health, Harvard School of Public Health (2009), Adjunct Professor, Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, and Honorary Professor of Medicine, University of Sydney, and a number of awards and prizes recognizing his contributions to global public health. Professor Reddy edited the National Medical Journal of India for 10 years and serves on the editorial board of several international and national journals. He has more than 350 scientific publications in international and Indian peer reviewed-journals.
